Safety Information

You and your family's personal safety and the safety of your property are two of your most important considerations. To create a safe environment you must have the right mental attitude about safety. Think and act as "Safety is MY Responsibility". The mere act of you taking responsibility is the first step in improving the safety of your environment.

Things you can do around your home to improve safety are:

Exterior of your home

  • Quality locks on all exterior doors
  • Don't leave windows open, but if you do make sure you have tamper resistant screens on all open windows
  • Automated exterior lighting
  • Don't create hiding places by your home, use smaller plants and shrubs next to your home
  • Maintain the premises and keep it free of debris and clutter
  • Have the entrance to your property well identified (street address highly visible day or night), so it's easy to find by emergency personnel such as fire and police
  • Install a 24-hour monitored alarm (burglary, smoke and fire) system

Interior of your home

  • Install smoke detectors throughout your home, if applicable, change the batteries per manufacturer's recommendation, but a minimum of at least once a year
  • Create a fire escape plan and practice it, make sure everyone knows it and where to immediately meet after the escape, so you can make sure everyone has gotten out
  • Be particularly careful of:
    • Old or damaged electric cords
    • Too many electric cords plugged into any outlet
    • Space heaters
    • Active or hot cooking surfaces, stoves and fire places
    • Lit candles left unattended
    • Lighters and matches
    • Flammable items next to a heat source
    • Extremely flammable liquids should be kept outside the home in an enclosed and ventilated structure that is located away from the home
  • Have your air conditioning system (heating and/or cooling) serviced twice a year and change the filter(s) regularly
  • Clean your clothes dryer's filter after every use
  • Fix any minor problem (electrical, plumbing and/or structural) before it becomes a major problem
  • Keep hallways, doorways and exits free of clutter

These recommendations are just a few of the things you can do to improve your safety. You should also check with your local emergency services (fire and police) for additional suggestions. Some emergency services offer free courtesy inspections of your home and premises.
